Virgil Otto Briley, age 79, of Elkville, died Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church with Pastor Ted Clark officiating. Burial will be in the De Soto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Leffler - Poulson Funeral Home of Benton.
Mr. Briley was born on February 7, 1934 in Benton, the son of Virgil Green Briley and Lois Mae (Thomason) Briley.
He attended Benton High School where he was known as Otto Briley, a standout in High School Football for the Rangers in the early 1950's. He would attend Memphis State on a football scholarship, but soon moved back home and married the former Shirley Elaine Craig on May 1, 1954 and together they celebrated 59 years in marriage.
Mr. Briley worked as a brick mason and a farmer, but would last work and retire from a career in coal mining. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. and was a member of the Elkville First Baptist Church. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 26 while residing in Granite City.
Otto loved to play golf, hunt arrow heads, go dancing, and feed and watch the many different bird species around his property and home.
He was given a second chance in life as he was a ten year survivor of cancer until his recent diagnosis.
But most of all, he loved his family very much.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Elaine Briley of Elkville, a son Craig Briley and wife Julie of Elkville, a daughter Cindy Whitley and husband Jim of Du Quoin, IL, four grandchildren Ara Briley and wife Jessie of Chandler, AZ, Ali Briley Ruiz and husband Alex of Lake Havasu City, AZ, Travis Whitley and wife Ashley of Hillsboro, MO, Taylor Whitley of Hillsboro, MO, step-grandchildren Kellie Sundeen, Richard Harris, Jim Whitley, Jr., Darren Whitley, Megan Liwanag, Jessica Martin; great-grandchildren Alea, Alissa, Alejandro Ruiz, Emma Briley, Tessa Whitley, step-great-grandchildren Ethan Martin, Clint, Kyle and Seth Sundeen, Maxwell Harris, Madison Whitley, Ryan and Branden Whitley; step-great-great-grandchildren Madilyn and Axel Sundeen; two sisters Sue Lacy of Hurst, Joan Johnson and husband Lloyd of Lincoln, IL and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church or The Benton Ranger Football Program and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Shirley, We are so very sorry to hear about you beloved Otto. By the time we knew, the service was over. Didn't know if he had been ill or something just happened. We Came to Elkville Sunday, To try and find your house. No luck, and don't have your phone # so I finally found this online. I pray you get it. We want you to know we would have came to the service if we had known in time. We feel terrible!! Our prayers are for you to be able to handle this next year without him.
